Is it just me or is Google Search sporting a new design?
When I first saw it earlier today, I figured I was logged into my Gmail account or something. (I double checked and I wasn’t.) Now, while doing some research, I’m greeted with the new layout…again.
What’s changed? (You can click the above image for a full view with numbered outline.)
- The image, local, maps, news, and book search is now in a left sidebar instead of up top.
- The top sponsored listings seem to have disappeared. (Update: They aren’t missing, they’re just above the search listing and they’ve also changed in appearance - just a bit though.)
- The number of available results is moved to the bottom next to the next/previous links.
- The sponsored listings in the right sidebar are now the same size and font as the actual returned search results.
This new layout looks suspiciously like their blog search engine results with a few minor tweaks, but I like it. It’s a lot cleaner and the extra whitespace is nice. Though, I miss having the number of possible search results up top instead of having to scroll all the way down.

I have read this new design thing, on many different places. But I have yet to see it myself.
I think the current design is much better than this.

I guess Google was just testing the waters with the new design and only made it available in a few random searches. Since I haven’t seen it for a while, maybe they decided against it.
