Some of the comments on Robert Scobles observations about brrreeeport has degraded into a debate over why accurate search counts are important.

To Girl B. Average, the number of pages that references her requested topic is irrelevant. She only cares about the page that has the information she’s looking for.

However, Girl B. Average is not the only person using search engines. Marketers, SEOs, PR specialists, as well as other professionals use search engines for tracking and monitoring user response and attention.

If we hop over to Technorati and do a search for a specific keyword or tag, we can quickly see from the number how many people are talking about it. The same should be true for traditional search engines.

Professionals may use this data in various ways or to help plan their next course of action. When the numbers are off, it can take more time (that could be better spent elsewhere) tracking down the accurate results.

There is no question that accurate search results are important, but so are accurate search counts.
