The jury is still out on whether advertising via sheep is brilliant, inhumane, or simply a deranged idea.
At first glance, I’d have to go with deranged. Advertising on sheep?
On closer inspection, it may be working. This advertising campaign has caught the eyes and attention of many.
Most importantly, I think it’s pretty clever.
But, I notice that more people are talking about the sheep than hotels.nl…
At least online.
‘A’ for effort.

I’d have been inclined to link to a more reputable source such as the NYT to dispell the old hoax claims
Personally I’ve just been driving round the top of New Zealand and there were so many sheep no farmer could possibly dress them all although I guess if they were dressed it would catch our attention!
I don’t know how the Dutch normally dress their sheep but this appears to be one of those ad campaigns where the real effort is in the viral factor (ie getting publicity for the campaign) than in the effectiveness of the campaign itself.
We’ll see!

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Also, thanks for the link to the NYT article, had not known about it.
And I’m inclined to agree that this is most likely a publicity stunt for the viral effect, but I’ve read (can’t remember where at the moment) that the advertising has been effective for hotels.nl.
This came about after they found out they were going to be fined as the ads are considered billboard advertising which is illegal.
I’ll try to hunt down that link…

I should also mention that the article I’m referencing went into a little more detail than the NYT article about the fine and ROI of sheep leasing.
