For a while now, I’ve been realizing there are a number of ways to build links to new websites over time simply by participating within the blogosphere.
Simply, leave a comment with the desired anchor text in the name field. If the comment body itself allows for HTML, even better because the link can go again in the signature with a different set of anchor text (or linking to a different section of the website).
Look for blogs that don’t utilize the rel=nofollow attribute, and of course, try to find older blog entries that relate to the website you’d like to link to.
Use Google’s site: search feature whenever necessary to find entries related to your particular website. And if you can be one of the first few people to comment within an entry, even better.
Also, be mindful of the blog’s comment policy and be careful what you write in the comments because it will reflect upon the website being linked to.
If you come off like a spammer or idiot, the results could be having your comment (and link) removed altogether.

Teli, you say: “Look for blogs that don’t utilize the rel=nofollow attribute”.
How can we know when I blog doesn’t utilize that rule: is there a place to look for it? thanks.

Hi Adriana,
I actually discussed it in the second part of the Leveraging Comments, Trackbacks, and Pingbacks For Traffic - Finding Places To Comment.
Hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.

P.S. If you’ve happened across this entry and don’t have access to the private entries, the answer to the above question is check the blog’s source code for the rel=nofollow link.

I also have recently removed nofollow tag from my blog to reward my members with backlinks. They actually particapte to increase content my site. If you have comment moderation on your website, then there is no need for nofollow. Say yes to Yesfollow, lol.

As long as someone is contributing to the topic I don’t have a problem giving them a real link back to their site. I agree with dsw.

I use a useful extension for Firefox called Search Status that will automatically highlight links that have the nofollow attribute turned on. This way you dont have to look at the page souce everytime.
Check it out at: http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/

Leon,
Thanks for providing the link to the Firefox plugin. This will definitely come in handy for checking which sites you’ll want to comment on more often.

(P.S. If you enjoy a blog and feel like commenting, don’t let their use of nofollow deter you, though.)
